| VINCENT BROWN | |||
| Vincent Brown,
often called the first 'modern' painter in Queensland, was born in Brisbane
in 1901 and began painting watercolours at the age of 16. He became the
protégé of art promoter Adolph Albers under whose auspices
he exhibited in Brisbane and Sydney. In 1936 he went overseas to study at the Slade and Grosvenor Schools and Central School of Arts and Crafts in London 1936–1939 and Oxford 1939–1940. He returned to Australia in 1940 where he spent the war years working in 3rd Division Concert Party AIF. Before leaving again in 1948 for the UK, he held four one-man exhibitions. After 30 years living in the UK, he finally returned to Australia in 1977 and found what was virtually a treasure trove of early works at the family home in Brisbane. These paintings had lain for all those years in a shed under the house and the etching plates had even been buried under the ground! Vincent Brown died in Brisbane in 2001. His most notable exhibitions were at the Verlie Just Town Gallery 1977; Bloomfield Galleries 1980 to launch Vincent Brown: Life and Work; and a large retrospective at the Queensland Art Gallery 1990–1991. He is represented in the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum, London; French Ministry of Fine Art, Paris; National Gallery of Australia; Art Gallery of New South Wales; National Gallery of Victoria; Queensland Art Gallery; New England Regional Art Museum; Ballarat Fine Art Gallery; Queensland University and private collections in the USA, UK, New Zealand and Australia. All works are unframed unless otherwise noted and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. If you require any further information on these works, please don't hesitate to contact us. |
