Ralph
Balson (1890-1964) became closely involved with modern art through
Frank Hinder, Grace Crowley and Rah Fizelle. In 1920 at the age
of 30 he began his career in art. These four artists were included
in the historically important Exhibition held at David Jones
Gallery in August 1939. This was the first group show in Sydney
to propound Post-Impressionist modern principles.
In July 1941 Balson held his first solo exhibition of abstract paintings in Sydney.
This was not only a first for Balson, it was a milestone in Australian art history,
being the first one-man show of non-objective paintings ever held in Australia.
Ralph Balson died in 1964 and four years after his death Patrick McCaughey wrote: Ralph
Balson is a classic story of the artist neglected in his lifetime and hailed
as a master after his death ... Balson achieved what few other Australian painters
have achieved: a great last period where all the themes and obsessions of an
artist are brought together into a climatic unity ... nobody will ever doubt
again that Balson is one of the masters of Australian paintings.
Whereas Balson's earlier constructive paintings were akin to Mondrian (in 1955
he wrote: the greatest single influence has been Mondrian), his later
work was more attuned to the New York School as represented by Jackson Pollock.
He considered his poured paintings as 'matter paintings' and said: I try
to find out what the substance of paint will give me, to make a Painting a Matter
Painting.
