Frank
Hinder, a pioneer of Australian abstraction, commands a prominent
position in the history of Australian art. The many facets of his
experiences inspired the diversity of his themes; this diversity
was embodied to a large extent in his lithographs which reveal an
originality of concept combined with painstaking craftsmanship. Frank's
first series of lithographs dating from 1939 to 1961 total 78. His
bird and animal studies range from the realistic (Two Cats, Frogmouth
Family) to the abstract (Waterbird, Cat and Kittens) and
other themes reflect those of his paintings (Lake Fisherman, Subway,
Christ Is With Us, Advance and River Bank).
Frank Hinder: Lithographs is
an indispensable book for any art library and contains 37 full page
black and white plates, 9 full page colour plates, 16 pages of working
drawings and a fully illustrated catalogue raisonné. |

Penguin Australia
Hardcover, dustjacket, sewn, black and white
$65.00
This book was one of four shortlisted for the Queensland Premier's Literary Prize
for non-fiction 2005 |
'He
... is an absolute artist in the way he selects his subjects.
He is a warrior with his camera and would go anywhere or do anything
to get a picture.'
Lionel Greenstreet, First Officer
Shackleton's Endurance Expedition
Frank Hurley was once a household
name in Australia. Now most famous for his photographs of the Mawson
and Shackleton (Endurance) Antarctic expeditions, he was also
a visual chronicler of many of the major events of the twentieth
century and of a rapidly disappearing non-Western world. He was an
official photographer in two world wars, a pioneering documentary-maker,
participant in early feats of aviation, and cinematographer on major
Australian feature films of the 1930s, including The Squatter's
Daughter and The Silence of Dean Maitland. At the height
of his fame he even knocked on Hollywood's doors. In his later years,
he travelled the length and breadth of his country to produce illustrated
books that eulogised Australia and its people.
Hurley was a man of ceaseless energy and unbounded enthusiasm for
his craft, an enigmatic and sometimes contradictory character
— a loner who courted publicity, a curmudgeonly perfectionist,
a pragmatic sentimentalist. He craved adventure, excitement and accolades,
often forsaking his family and business commitments to travel and
work all over the globe.
In this comprehensive new biography, with over 100 photographs including
never-before-published Hurley images and other rarely seen material
from the family archive and Hurley's lesser-known adventures, Alasdair
McGregor vividly describes the character, achievements and disappointments
of a driven and remarkable Australian.
Painter, photographer and one-time architect,
Alasdair McGregor is the author of The Kimberley: Horizons of
Stone, Australia's Wild Islands (both with Quentin Chester)
and Mawson's Huts: An Antarctic Expedition Journal. He was
artist and photographer for three AAP Mawson's Huts Foundation expeditions
to Antarctica, and in 2000 was curator (for the Australian High Commission
to Canada) of '... that sweep of splendour': A Century of Australians
in Antarctica, a travelling exhibition featuring the photography
of Frank Hurley. |

At the start
of the 20th century only a handful of ski clubs existed anywhere
in the world. Then, within a few short years, turmoil throughout
Europe virtually stopped all ski sports for the next three and a
half decades.
Three Norwegians, Elias Gottaas, Soren Torp and Carl Bjerknes, sought
their fortunes on the Kiandra Gold Fields in 1860. Gold did not make
their fam but their contributions to sport did. There can be very
little doubt that had these men not ventured to our shores, skiing
as a recreation, would not have developed in Australia until the
universal appetite for the sport took hold after the Second World
War.
Norman W Clarke
It defies almost all imagination to believe that the world's first
Snow Ski Club was formed in Australia, only seventy three years after
the first European settlement. The Holmenkollen Ski Museum confirms
that the first two ski clubs in the world were formed by Norwegians
in 1861, both in Australia and Norway. This book traces the history
of the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club which is now known as the Kiandra Pioneer
Ski Club (1870) Ltd. It is an historical record of the club from
its earliest beginnings interspersed with photographs dating back
to 1870.
