Frank Hinder (1906-1992), a pioneer of Australian abstraction and destined to become deeply involved in the development of modern art in Australia, led a most varied, eventful and colourful life. The many facets of his experiences inspired the diversity of his themes; this diversity being embodied to a large extent in his lithographs which reveal an originality of concept combined with painstaking craftsmanship. He was one of the few Australian artists to study in the United States instead of Europe. In 1927/28 he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, USA, in 1929 at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, New York and in 1930 at the Master Institute at Roerich Museum, New York.
He worked in lithography, oils, watercolours, pencil, pen and mixed media and is represented in every major Australian gallery. Frank Hinder was an innovative and expirmental artist and between the years of 1977 and 1983, when he produced his Second Series of lithographs, many of the lithographs he printed were "one-offs". He drew on many lithographic stones but often only produced one print and then experimented with the image and produced another, different print. Invariably he printed in a different colour ink, added hand colouring or spent time adding collage to the work. He called these "one-off" prints Artist's Proofs, State Prints or State Proofs.
When Frank editioned his lithographs, invariably his editions were under 10 prints of any one image. However, even in his editioned lithographs, many prints vary within the edition itself with coloured printing, hand colouring or collage even though they are not Artist's Proofs, State Prints or State Proofs. Quite often, no two prints in an edition are identical.
Frank’s lithographs are an integral component of his art, encompassing all of the themes he developed over his lifetime. Chief among these were works concerned with prisms of light and colour, spacial relationships and the cosmos. His major planar series, one of interlocking grids and circles, and works such as Airborne, Noontide II (Noontide I is in the de luxe Frank Hinder: Lithographs), The Sun is but a Morning Star and Eclipse are unique prints of beauty and individuality.
