CARNIVAL COLLECTION
In 2001 Fay Wills was offered her first solo exhibition by the prestigious Caloundra City Regional Gallery, Queensland, where she exhibited a collection of graphite drawings depicting aspects of coal mining and road construction. Although Fay had painted sporadically during her long and successful teaching career, and was the recipient of three major art awards during the 1980s (including Peak Hour Rush which was awarded first prize by the then Art Education Officer at the Queensland Art Gallery in the drawing section of the Sunshine Coast Art Show), it was not until she retired in 1995 that she was able to devote herself to full time painting. The Carnival Collection, based on geometrical shapes and colour combinations using acrylics and oil pen on canvas boards, is strictly visual and demands no effort to seek any subtle interpretation or emotive explanation that may have been expressed by the artist. This highly original collection marries a knowledge of form and colour with a keen understanding of abstract rhythms. Concept, style and application are all simple and clear cut but the resulting images, concerned with planes and intersecting angles, are complex, dynamic and memorable in the use of colour combinations and shaded shapes. Colour and shape are the dominant factors in these works. Each of the series Carnival Pipe Dreams (in blue, pink, black and white) and the Carnival Roller Coaster group (in orange, yellow, black and white) may be hung as a triptych, while the vibrant green, red, orange, yellow, pink and blue tones of the Carnival Trees contrast with the dramatic red and black Carnival Design paintings. The diversity of these works can be seen with the busy multi-coloured clown paintings at a variance with the tranquillity of the orange Carnival in Space Solar and blue Carnival in Space Lunar and the energetic Carnival series in purple, grey, blue, green and orange. One of the most interesting aspects of these paintings is their versatility. They may be hung horizontally or vertically, which ever way suits the viewer.
