Gustav Klmit
Gustav Klmit (1862-1918) was born in Baumgarten, near Vienna in Austria-Hungary, the second of seven children. He came from an artistic family, his father being an engraver in gold. He began his professional career painting interior murals and ceilings in large public buildings but is best remembered for his sensual paintings of women.

Paintings of Klimt's 'Golden Phase' (1899-1910) received positive critical reaction and success. Many of his paintings from this period incorporated gold leaf, inspired undoubtedly by the work of his father and also by the golden aspects of Byzantine art located in Venice and Ravenna.
