Norman Lindsay - Doreen card

Blank card with envelope
14.8 x 10.5 cm

The original watercolour Doreen was painted c.1933. The model was the beautiful, red headed Doreen Hubble. She was a country girl who came to Sydney when she was eighteen. Unable to find work, she was helped by family friend Victor Mann, then Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, who introduced her to a number of artists including Longstaff and Thea Proctor for whom she began modelling. She married during the early 1930s and kept modelling for a further five years before beginning a family. In later years Doreen formed a close friendship with Peter Lindsay, son of Percy.

In an interview with Lin Bloomfield, Doreen recalled posing for the watercolour:
Oh yes, I was dressed in a sort of see through dress, a black georgette frock. I posed for Norman at his Bridge Street studio and of all the work I did for him and the costumes I wore, the one I wore for Doreen was my favourite.
