In October 1909 Norman sailed for Europe on the Orient liner Osterley, with his sister Ruby and her husband Will Dyson. Colombo was one of the ports the Osterley called in at and where passengers were allowed to disembark. This drawing was sketched on the outskirts of Colombo.

Provenance
This drawing is one of a number of works from an estate collection. The original owner purchased Village, Ceylon from the 1984 Bloomfield Galleries' exhibition held to launch the book Norman Lindsay: Impulse to Draw.
